Description
English: As part of the celebration of International Women’s Month, the House of Representatives allowed last Monday's session to be presided over by lady legislators as the chamber tackled issues relating to the rights and welfare of women. Pursuant to Section 15 (h), Rule IV of House Rules, Speaker Pantaleon D. Alvarez named the following women lawmakers to preside successively over the day’s session: Reps. Linabelle Ruth R. Villarica (4th District, Bulacan), Emmeline Aglipay-Villar (Party-list, DIWA), Glona G. Labadlabad (2nd District, Zamboanga del Norte), and Lorna C. Silverio (3rd District, Bulacan). Meanwhile, lady lawmakers delivered privilege speeches centering on women's issues. They were Rep. Estrellita Suansing (1st District, Nueva Ecija), role of women in history; Rep. Sol Aragones (3rd District, Laguna, raising breast cancer awareness; Rep. Emi Calixto-Rubiano (Lone District, Pasay), Gandang Pinay; Arlene D. Brosas (Party-list, Gabriela), women's clamor for genuine change, social justice and peace; Rep. Sarah Jane I. Elago (Party-list, Kabataan), fight against labor contractualization; Rep. France L. Castro (Party-list, ACT Teachers), plight of teachers in the country; and Deputy Speaker Pia S. Cayetano, denial of access to reproductive health services and information. Another highlight of the session was the presence of Binibining Pilipinas Universe Maria Mica Maxine Medina, who accepted from Deputy Speaker Bai Sandra A. Sema a copy of House Resolution 816, authored by Calixto-Rubiano, commending her Outstanding Representation at the 65th Miss Universe Pageant and for being a source of continued pride for Filipinos.
