Некада се на овом месту налазио велики епископски центар, Године 1220, обновљен је стари византијски храм, на граници старе државе, Цркву је обновио краљ Драгутин, а живописана је у време краља Милутина, Све до 16. века овде је био један од дванаест најважнијих црквених центара Србије, Овај крај је опустео после сеобе под Чарнојевићем, Оживео је тек после око сто педесет година, Према инену храма, некадашње насеље Моравице добило је данашње име – Ариље,

У храму су гробови принца Урошица и епископа Мекурија, а чуване су и мошти Светог Ахилија.
