Summary
[edit]DescriptionHoyt Building 873 Broadway.jpg | The Hoyt Building at 873-879 Broadway on the corner of East 18th Street was built in 1868 for Edwin Hoyt, a prominent merchant, and was designed in by Griffith Thomas Second Empire Commercial style. Its Broadway facade was originally essentially identical to the building next door at 881-887 Broadway that Thomas would design in 1868-69 for Arnold Constable & Company, the dry goods emporium, although the similiarities between the buildings have become obscured due to differential alterations to them, most notably the 2-story mansard roof added to the Arnold Constable Building. In 1888 the northern part of the Hoyt Building was extended around the corner section in an "L", to 18th Street by Delemos & Cordes, and in 1905 a one-story addition was made to the corner section, an other alterations were made. The building is located within the Ladies' Mile Historic District. (Source: "NYCLPC Ladies' Mile Historic District Designation Report, volume 1") |
