Dear Sir: It is with deepest regret that I find myself un-able on account of an illness, not serious, but which makes itimpossible for me to travel, to be present at the reunion of theold-time railway men of Iowa, for it Avas my good fortune earlyin 1853 to cross the Mississippi River and be one of a partyunder Mr. Peter A. Dey, one of the most distinguished railroadengineers and citizens, that made the first survey across theState of Iowa from the Mississippi River at Davenport toCouncil Bluffs on the Missouri River, and to take part in thebuilding of that line to Iowa City. I think it was the firstrailroad built in the State of Iowa. I take great pleasure andgreat satisfaction in extending my greetings to my railroadcomrades of that day.
