Excavations and obstructions,which are sometimes of necessity placed in the streets, haveto be marked by lights at night. And not the least of themeans employed by the government to prevent accidents isthe provision of lighting the streets at night by gas orelectricity. Thus you see that in many, many ways thegovernment throws out its strong arms to protect us fromaccidents over which we ourselves could have no control. In addition to all these precautions that are taken to pre-vent accidents, most cities provide for the immediatetreatment of those who are injured. Ambulances in PROTECTION OV LIFE AND HEALTH 29 charge of skilled surgeons stand ready to hasten to anypart of the city where an accident has occurred. Thereis usually a public hospital also where sick and injuredpersons who are unable to pay may receive whatever treat-ment they need at the expense of the government.
