color, which can be detected as the birdwheels in the air and the sunlight strikes it. Thered-shoulder, besides having a slight rufous color onthe shoulder of the wing, has the under-parts ofa much darker hue than the red-tail, brownish andheavily marked, and the tail banded with alternateblack and white. The Immature red-tail has abanded tail, but with fewer bands, and its light under-parts are characteristic. Both these species soar andcircle a good deal In flight, and are also seen perchingmotionless on isolated trees, especially the red-tail. Another hawk with almost equal spread of wingsbut of more slender build Is the marsh hawk, distin-guished by the conspicuous white spot on the rump.This variety generally flies rather low, quarteringover swampy land. In winter another large hawkwith white on the rump Is occasionally seen aboutopen land, the American rough-legged hawk, a slug-gish bird, as large as the red-tail, feathered to thetoes.
