The nineteenth cen-tury workmen of Europe had no suchpower of effective design. In this, as inbuilding, the eleventh century men weresurpassed by those of the years to follow:and but for that still greater Gothic art(see Chapter IV) we should have to goto Romanesque architecture for constantstimulus. The architecture of the Eastern half ofthe Empire was much less nearly Romanin its plan. Basilicas there were ; but at avery early epoch the type of what the Ger-mans call the Centralbau prevailed.
