Now as to theforest of flying buttresses, those sloping barsof stone carried on stone arches, which sur-round the clearstory, the only purpose ofthese is to receive and neutralize the thrustof the vaults within. The high vault abovethe clearstory pushes against the uppermostflying buttresses. The vault of the inneraisle has its much less formidable thrusttaken up by the vaults of the outer aisle asfar as the lines of the plan are straight,east and west, and by those of the chapelsas soon as the curve of the chevet ^ begins.By means of the double set of flying but-tresses, those within and higher and theouter and lower ones, the thrust of thehigh vaults is carried across the wholespace occupied by the two aisles, and finallyturned over to the upright piers whichthemselves serve also as buttresses for theouter aisle.
