Close to the spectator the lofty wallbroken up into canopies and arches andcrowned with a forest of pinnacles is en-tirely of carved oak, and includes an in-credible number of most exquisite carvings,which decorate all parts of the partitionitself as well as the stalls or the seats forchoristers which are dimly seen below.The iron gates, seen as closed, give access tothis enclosure which is the liturgical choir,that is to say, the enclosure made withinthe architectural choir, and intended toserve for the clergy and their assistants.As to epochs, the whole structure of thechurch is of the thirteenth century: itsvaulting, its arches and piers and windowsand its delicate sculpture; and its originalplan, though conceived during the lastyears of the twelfth century, cannot bethought to have been perfected until thestructure rose upon it. The carved workof the choir is very much later, represent-ing the last development of Gothic art andbelonging more properly to our Chapter V:(98)
