The attempt has finally to beabandoned, and the horse artillerymen remain in the open,calmly and methodically loading and firing, until the hailof lead to which they are exposed causes such heavy lossesthat their officers order them to take shelter in a hollownear the guns. Soon the batteries are silent and help-less, with the German infantry steadily sweeping towardsthem. The 1st Battery of Field Artillery—the Blazers, as itis known in the army—comes to the rescue. Major Rex,its commander, has for the last few minutes been busilyemployed in hunting for a suitable place from which hisguns can get a good view of the XXVth Regiment, andyet not be exposed to the overwhelming fire of the numer-ous German batteries. He discovers a little knoll abouthalf-way between Napoleons Wood and Maison Roi whichfulfils both the foregoing conditions, brings his battery upto it, and opens a rapid enfilade fire along the Germanlines at a range of about a mile.
