roofed over with floor boards torn fromthe ruined houses of the village, and then covered witha foot of earth. They are dug close to the trenches fromwhich the men fire, and are joined to them by passagescut through the earth at intervals. Although the coveringis not sufficient to keep out a shell, yet it affords ampleprotection against shrapnel bullets and splinters. The gunners prepare alternative emplacements in con-cealed places, to which they can move their guns andopen fire afresh should the enemy discover their positions.Several strong parties are also sent out by the Grenadiersto dig shelter trenches on the brow of the hill three orfour hundred yards in front of the Guards trenches. Theywill not be occupied, but are merely to catch the enemyseye. They are, in fact, dummy shelter trenches, likethat made by Lieutenant Cairnes on Ways Ridge thismorning. A few sticks with a dead mans cap here andthere complete a deception which, half a mile away, it isalmost impossible to detect.
