[edit]DescriptionHow Much Liquid Nitrogen Did We Need to Keep Webb Cool?.png |
English: Just how much liquid nitrogen did it take to freeze NASA's James Webb Space Telescope for a little more than 90 days? This graphic shows a couple of ways to measure it.
Engineers at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston used both liquid nitrogen and cold, gaseous helium to keep Webb cold during its cryogenic testing inside Chamber A. Both cryogens were run through shrouds that enveloped the telescope. The liquid nitrogen was expended throughout the test, and the gaseous helium was continuously cycled inside a closed system. The volume of that closed system? About 75,000 standard cubic feet, or about 1/4th the volume of a Goodyear Blimp.
