Buchanan wanted Kansas admittedwith the Lecompton constitution, which permitted slavery.Douglas declared that the Lecompton constitution hadbeen fraudulently adopted, that it did not represent thewill of the people, and that the attempt to bring Kansasinto the Union as a slave State was an outrage and aflagrant violation of his great principle of popular sover-eignty. When the Democratic State convention, assem- How Abraham Lincoln Became President. 39 bled at Springfield April 21, 1858, adopted a resolutionapproving the course of Senator Douglas and declaringfor his reelection, a number of delegates, BuchananDemocrats, withdrew and held a separate convention.But the anti-Douglas movement within the Democraticparty was not formidable. Every member of the lowerhouse of Congress from Illinois stood by him and hisleadership of the party in Illinois was not seriously dis-puted. No other Democrat had the temerity to be candi-date for Senator against him.

For some time beforehand it wasgenerally conceded that Abraham Lincoln would bebrought forward by the convention as the partys candi-date for United States Senator to oppose Senator Doug-las. Lincoln carefully prepared a speech for the occasion.He was not unaware of the great responsibility thatdevolved upon him and every word to be uttered receivedthe most thoughtful consideration. He was about to giveexpression to a thought that had gradually evolved in hismind out of the controversy of the preceding four years.He was to promulgate a new issue. The new doctrinewas stated so boldly that it startled many of Lincolnsown followers, who declared he had made a politicalblunder. B
