Summary

[edit]
Description
English: House of Dr Knox, Newington Few people who pass by this unremarkable Drycleaners probably realise that the house directly behind it (No.4 Newington Place, now renumbered 17) was the residence of Dr Robert Knox, the disgraced surgeon implicated in the West Port murders of Burke and Hare. Although a committee of inquiry cleared Knox of complicity, the Edinburgh mob held him accountable nonetheless. In 1829, a few days after Burke was hanged, a crowd converged on the house and began throwing stones at its windows. An effigy of Knox was hanged from a nearby tree and then set alight by a bonfire underneath. Knox, disguised in Highland garb, complete with dirk and pistols, escaped through a back door and the City Guard eventually dispersed the crowd. Knox moved to the village of Lauder in the Scottish Borders where he continued to practice until his death in 1862.
