Medals and other costly testimonials were sent by the Queenof England, by different Legislatures in our own country, and by scien-tific associations throughout the world. Tlic mere casual notices ofthe press, as collected by his friend Mr. Childs, the publisher, fill sev-eral albums of folio size. ^ But the recipient of these nonors was not destined himself long toenjoy them. Entirely underestimating those labors, (of which indeed butfew can form an adequate conception,) he had been quite too thought-less of the claims of a body he had so long been accustomed to subjectto his purpose, and only awoke to a discovery of the error when it wastoo late. With this melancholy conviction, he announced the comple-tion of the work to a friend in the modest and touching sentence :— The book, poor as it is, has been my coffin. He left the country for England under a presentiment that he shouldnever return. For the first time in his life, departure was shaded withforeboding.
