35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Aves; Order: Passeriformes; Family: Corvidae; Genus: Corvus; Genus species: Corvus brachyrhynchos. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 43-53 cm; Weight: .5 kg; Identification: The house crow has black body feathers glossed with metallic violet. Its wings are black with a green-violet gloss, and the eyes are brown; Habitat: Woodlands, rural and urban areas; Diet: Omnivore: insects, crustaceans, snakes, young birds, carrion, corn, grain; Reproduction: Breeding pairs of this species may mate for life. Each pair lays 4-6 eggs beteen February and June. The female incubates the eggs for 18 days before they hatch; Social Structure: In the fall, large flocks gather in communal roosts. Foraging is usually done in pairs; Behavior: Crows are very adaptable. Northern populations are migratory; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: If threatened by a hawk or owl, flocks of crows will attack the larger predator.
