Summary

[edit]
Description Built in the 1400s BC and reconstructed multiple times, with the last significant reconstruction taking place in the 500s AD, during the Byzantine period, this house was mistakenly interpreted as a “House of Pleasure,” or brothel, by archaeologists during the early 20th Century. This misconception has since been understood, but the misnomer has stuck around. The houses were, in fact, private residences, with shops at the ground level along the major adjacent streets. The houses fell into ruins after the city was abandoned due to the silting of the city’s harbor during the Byzantine period, and were excavated in more modern times. The ruins of the ancient city of Ephesus were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.
