Summary
[edit]DescriptionHoudek - South Dakota's State Soil (7894573486).jpg | The South Dakota Legislature made Houdek (pronounced hoo-deck) the official State Soil in 1990. South Dakota has over 650 different soils. Houdek soil does not occur in any other state an it is representative of soils formed under the influence of prairie grasses. Houdek soil was chosen as the State Soil because Houdek and closely related soils occur on more than two millino acres across South Dakota. Scientists classify the Houdek soil as fine-loamy, mixed, superactive mesic Typic Arugiustolls. For more information on soils, visit www.soils.usda.gov/ or contact the South Dakota office of the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) at (605) 352-1200 or www.sd.nrcs.usda.gov. |
