Description

No começo do séc. XV foi levantada uma capelinha dedicada a Santa Maria do Castelo num terraço não longe do cimo do monte em lembrança da batalha travada em Trancoso entre soldados de Portugal e de Castela.

Mais tarde outra capela se ergueu, substituindo a primeira. E esta capela se manteve até 1832, data da entronização da imagem da Senhora do Castelo no templo que ainda hoje se ergue no aplainado cume da colina, mandado levantar pela piedade de Miguel Pais de Sá Menezes.

A capela é uma construção de linhas esbeltas mas simples onde ressalta a singularidade da altíssima torre elevada a prumo sobre a fachada. O interior do templo luminoso mostra uma elegante capela-mor cujo retábulo de sabor neoclássico se levanta sobre altos degraus.
