Note: Less than two years the Hotel Oregon opened, it was renamed the Benson Hotel. 

Caption on image: Hotel Oregon, Portland, Oregon. 

Printed on verso: Portland's Latest and Most Magnificient Hostelry.  Conceded to be the Best Constructed, Best Furnished, and Best Equipt Hotel in the West.  Opened February 1913.  Wright-Dickinson Hotel Co. Proprietors; When in Seattle, stop at the Hotel Seattle. 

Postmarked: January 22, 1914.

The Hotel Oregon was built by lumber baron Simon Benson in 1913. After the hotel lost money in the first sixteen months, Benson decided to take over management and renamed the hotel after himself. The philanthropist funded the installation of twenty four-spout Benson water fountains in downtown Portland. Benson believed that water from the hills of Mt. Hood should be freely available to citizens. He also wanted to discourage his workers from drinking during their shifts.
