Summary
[edit]DescriptionHotel Bacon & Elite House, Spokane.jpg |
English: 224-30 West Riverside. The Hotel Bacon (left) and Elite House (right), two of the oldest existing SRO Hotels in Spokane's East downtown district, built in 1902 and 1900, respectively.
The Bacon, originally built for Elthia G. Bacon from late 1901 to early 1902. Designed by Arthur E. Saunders, the construction of the $10,000 building was funded by a $20,000 settlement paid to her husband William Bacon by the Spokane Falls & Northern Railroad after suffering an accident on the job in 1901. He would operate the hotel in its early years. (Spokane Daily Chronicle, Nov 4, 1901, pg 5) It was later known as the Hotel Southern, Hotel Cornell, Frye Hotel and finally the Judy Apartments. The Elite House was built in the summer of 1900 by John H. Clemmer for pioneer Albert E. Keats for $4,000. (Spokane Daily Chronicle, June 21, 1900, pg. 5). Sometimes referred to as the Keats Building, It was later known as the Plaza Hotel. |
