Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Hotchkiss-Sidway House, 37 Oakland Place, Buffalo, New York, October 2020. A contributing property to the locally-listed, NRHP-eligible Linwood Historic District, the house was described by local architectural historian Martin Wachadlo as "Oakland Place's most effervescent rendition of the Colonial Revival style". Here we see said style manifest itself with such features as an elegant full-width balustraded Tuscan portico on the ground floor, twin oriel windows on the second floor with keystone-adorned ovate windows between, and an intricate dormer piercing the steeply-pitched hip roof whose three windows are framed by Tuscan pilaster strips and crowned consecutively by a dentil course, an elegant swan's neck pediment, and a finial in the form of an urn. Like many of the houses on Oakland, #37 was the work of the locally-based firm of Lansing & Beierl; they designed it for local attorney William H. Hotchkiss (1851-1918), who lived here from 1898 (the year of its construction) through 1904 (when they sold the property and moved to an even more elegant residence on Lincoln Parkway). Hotchkiss was senior partner in the firm of Hotchkiss & Bush and later served as New York State Superintendent of Insurance; his previous residence was the Queen Anne-style house at 173 Summer Street). Its second and much longer-tenured owner was Frank St. John Sidway (1869-1938), another prominent local attorney as well as a descendent of several of the most prominent families of 19th-century Buffalo. Sidway lived in the house until his death, as did his widow Amelia (1881-1972).
