Summary
[edit]DescriptionHose fitting for new fire engine - Cloncurry.jpg |
English: A New Fire-Hose.
A really valuable and unique patent fire-hose nozzle has been brought out by a large English firm of fire-engine builders. This nozzle is so constructed that at a moment's notice the fireman can shield himself from the heat behind a continuous circle of spray. Very often in large conflagrations, the heat is so intense as to make it impossible for the fireman to advance to the positions where the hose would be most effective, and it is in just such cases that the new nozzle would be most advantageous. The shield of water can be made as large in circumference as desired, or can be directed at any angle by a simple movement of a milled head near the extremity of the nozzle. When it is desired to shut off the spray, so that the view may not be obscured, the reverse motion of the milled head accomplishes the purpose. The entire stream of water can be converted into spray or a solid column of water can be thrown with the spray shield for protection as described above. When the spray is bunched to the front in the form of a torrent it can be used for the purpose of extinguishing fires among light goods and materials which would be scattered by a solid stream. It is useful for on board ships for cleaning decks, etc., and also forms and ideal spreader for fountains; or it can be used for a tree sprinkler.
