[edit]DescriptionHosanna Zomi Christian Church - fmr St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church - Buffalo, New York - 20200518.jpg |
English: Hosanna Zomi Christian Church, 165 Germain Street, Buffalo, New York, May 2020. A relatively simple yet modest church building with a basilica floor plan, this product of local architect Władysław Zawadzki is very atypical of his work: eschewing his trademark French Renaissance-inspired style completely, here he borrows liberally from the Colonial Revival workbook, with round-arched windows on the first floor and bulls-eye oculi above the entrance and punctuating the side gables, each surrounded by decorative stone voussoirs, and prominent cornice returns on all three gables. The entrance vestibule presents some contrasting Tudor Revival elements, such as Gibbs surrounds framing the doorway, an angular approximation of a Tudor arch atop it, and a decorative parapet (hidden in this photo behind new light blue sheathing). It once also sported a tower with further Tudor detailing, namely a pair of pointed-arched windows, and of course a proud onion dome at its peak. The building was erected in 1906 as home to St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, the second church of that denomination in Buffalo, and not to be confused with St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church on nearby Hertel Avenue. Founded by a consortium of about twenty families in the small Ukrainian enclave in Black Rock, far removed from the established St. Nicholas church on Fillmore Avenue, the congregation continued using the building for worship until 1981, whereupon, in response to the neighborhood's changing demographics, they moved to a new site in Tonawanda where they remain today. Today the building plays host to Hosanna Zomi Christian Church, a congregation made up mainly of immigrants from Myanmar where services are held variously in English, Burmese, and the Zo language. |
