Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Horton Tower, near to Chalbury Common, Dorset, Great Britain. Arguably Dorset's most well known folly, it was built in about 1750 as a hunting 'observatory' for one Humphrey Sturt. Sturt was a keen follower of the hunt, and from its heights he could continue to watch the activities of the hunt in Cranborne Chase well into his old age. The tower featured in the 1967 film of Thomas Hardy's novel "Far from the Madding Crowd". In more recent years having fallen into serious disrepair, it was rescued from dereliction by a mobile phone company who renovated it and made it safe; it currently houses their antennaes. Grade II* Listed.
