OF AGRICULTURE. for the prizes and the spirit of true sportsmanship soon departs,resulting in the substitution of commercialism for sportsmanlike jfivalry. : The object of horticultural shows and garden competitions is togrouse the interest of citizens and their families, lead them to take -t greater interest in such matters, and to incite a deeper study of thebest methods of plant growth. When a pride in gardening isawakened, cultivators naturally get together and compare notes,study the best methods in vogue, and strive in every way to obtainthe best possible results.

When a desire is felt to add stimulus to plant growing in a com-munity by holding an exhibition it is necessary for a body of inter-ested persons to outline the method to be pursued. This may be anorganization already in existence, as a county or State fair, a farm-ers club, a grange, a garden or horticultural club, a boys or girlsclub, or a group brought together especially for the purpose. Wherethe exhibition is to be held by an organization not chiefly horticul-tural or agricultural it is frequently helpful to include on the com-mittee some who are not members of the club or group but who areespecially interested in such projects. After the organization is completed tlie scope of the exhibit mustbe outlined, whether a general vegetable, fruit, and flower show or HORTICULTUEAL EXHIBITIOI^S AI^D GARDEN COMPETITIOIsrS. 5 one devoted to any of these classes or to some particular kind ofvegetable, fruit, or flower.
