Un tableau intitulé Le médecin de campagne près du malade a été exposé par l'artiste à Paris au Salon de 1827 (numéro 544 du livret). Acquis par la Société des amis des arts de Paris, il a été présenté à leur exposition en 1828. Un critique en donne le commentaire suivant :

"M. Haudebourt-Lescot a vu dîner un médecin de campagne avec appétit. Frappé de sa trogne bourgeonnée, il l'a esquissée sur la toile, et pour nous apprendre que c'est un médecin il a mis un malade avec sa femme éplorée. Il est résulté de cela que, la réflexion n'ayant pas combiné la composition, la tête du médecin a été vraie et l'ensemble absurde. Car, en définitive, un médecin en arrivaut chez un malade ne débute pas par se mettre à table, et ce n'est pas en mangeant un morceau brûlant qu'il lui tâte le pouls. Et quel malade ! il se porte aussi bien que le médecin."
