prized as this. The species are among thegrandest and most beau-tiful of cultivated bulbs.Their variously coloredflowers, often agreeablyfragrant, are indispensableto a well-selected collec-tion of hardy plants. Aboutall of the species are hardyin well-drained soil. It iswell, however, as a pre-caution against very severefrost, to cover the bulbsin autumn. A few inchesof horse - manure, wellmixed with straw, as itoften is when it comesfresh from the stable, makes a very good cover-ing ; besides, the rains andmelting snows carry thefertilizing strength of thisdown into the soil beforeit is removed in the spring. Thus, it answers a doublepurpose. In the cultivation of Lilies, the first and mcst important requirement is gooddrainage. If the soil itself is not suited to the species, it may be easily modified by the use of suchmixtures as sand, peat and leaf-mold, but without the drainage all such are useless. Most Liliesprefer peat, and when this is obtainable, a mixture with loam and leaf-mold is very beneficial. It iswell, however, to have it well composted. Raw peat taken freshly from the bed or bog should beused with caution. It is well not to allow the bulbs to be exposed to the air or light any great lengthof time ; the outside scales of such exposed bulbs wither, which greatly diminishes their strength. Itis, therefore, generally better to obtain bulbs fresh from the nursery, which, if packed immediatelyafter lifting in damp sph
