Summary
[edit]DescriptionHorse Guards Approach Road (15018053337).jpg |
This is June 1945 and the Citadel is six years old and is yet to be covered in ivy. The Citadel was built from compressed pebble and flint blocks as an air raid shelter and strong point in the event of an invasion. The flat roof was planted with grass and bushes so that any German reconnaissance photographs would show that it was part of St. James's Park. There is also what appears to be an air raid siren on the roof. The lamppost on the left has been damaged and Horse Guards Parade is surrounded by barbed wire. Apparently part of a series of photos released by the War Office on June 11, 1945, depicting several secret government buildings in London created during the war.[1] |
