Description

Hornfels in the Precambrian of Ontario, Canada.

This fractured material is hornfels, a fine-grained contact metamorphic rock formed by heating of country rock by magma. Hornfels vary in appearance and mineral composition, depending on the nature of the original country rocks.

The original country rock (off-picture to the right) was cooked by intrusion of the Dubreuilville Dike (off-picture to the left) during the Archean.

Locality: Route 17 roadcut, south of the Route 519-Route 17 intersection, southeast of Princess Lake & north of the town of Wawa, Ontario, southeastern Canada (48° 15' 12.05" North latitude, 84° 52' 59.72" West longitude)
