Horned Grebe captures and swallows a a large cold-water pipefish (no common name other than that as far as I know) Syngnathus leptorhynchus, in Morro Bay, CA 14 Dec 2007 - set of 4 images

I am calling this a Horned Grebe (some claimed Eared Grebe) in part due to Bill Bouton's bill [at} charter dot net statement "Mike's image looks like Horned to me" and that Horned has : 1. apparently "heavy", straightish bill 2. high point of head is to the back, behind the eye. 3. pale spot in lore (between eye and base of bill) 4. bill shape: thin and upturned in Eared, stockier and heavier in Horned
