Notes Shot or powder horn made before 1864 This shot horn was given Heber Meiklejohn by his uncle Lemuel Meiklejohn. Lemuel drowned in the Hauraki Gulf on 22 March 1864 when the Meiklejohn family schooner "Rapid" capsized. The Rapid was returning from delivering a load of firewood to Auckland for the troops attacking Gate Pa, and had loaded timber at Mercury Bay for the return trip when struck down by a squall. Lemuel was about 18-19 years old at the time, and his nephew Heber was approximately 4 years old. The horn is marked on either side- - HILDEBRAND - ROBIN H S. 01 - SIEGFRIED - FOLKER
