Le Plateau-Mont-Royal, Station Sherbrooke, Mezzanine Type : Murale Technique(s) : porphyre Description de l’œuvre : Une murale sphérique de Mario Merola, faite en porphyre orange, enjolive la sortie menant à la Place du Cercle. Ce matériau était autrefois utilisé sur les quais du métro pour avertir les voyageurs de ne pas s’approcher trop près de la voie. Biographie : Né en 1931, Mario Merola étudie à l’École des beaux-arts de Montréal de 1946 à 1952, où il s’intéresse à la décoration auprès du peintre Maurice Raymond. En 1952, il se déplace en France pour y suivre un cours de scénographie à l’École supérieure des arts décoratifs de Paris. Il fréquente ensuite l’atelier Place des arts avant d’être engagé comme dessinateur de costumes à Radio-Canada. À partir de 1957, Merola réalise de nombreuses murales intégrées à l’architecture – dont celle du pavillon canadien de l’Exposition universelle de Bruxelles ou encore celles des stations de métro Sherbrooke et Charlevoix –, en plus de lutter pour la reconnaissance professionnelle des artistes. <a href="https://artpublicmontreal.ca/oeuvre/horizons/" rel="noreferrer nofollow">artpublicmontreal.ca/oeuvre/horizons/</a> |
