Summary

[edit]
Description

The Horatio Chapin House in South Bend, IN (1857). Chapin arrived in South Bend in 1831, when the city was only a few log cabins. He originally organized civic functions, including the first Presbytarian Church in South Bend, before setting up his business enterprises. He ran a small general store, which eventually expanded operations to become an important trading spot on the St. Joseph River. In 1838, he became cashier of the South Bend Branch of the State Bank of Indiana. When completed in 1857, his house was the largest in South Bend. Chapin lived here for five years before moving to Chicago to start the banking firm of Chapin, Wheeler & Co. He retired in 1862, and returned to his South Bend house until his 1871 death.

In 1888, the house was sold to Christopher Fassnacht, the president of the Indiana Lumber and Manufacturing Co. and vice president of the Citizen's National Bank. Fassnacht was contracted to build Clement Studebaker's house (Tippecanoe Place). Fassnacht moved the house a half-block southest and rotated it 90 degrees.
