Horace Greeley Letter to Hinton Rowan Helper |
||||||||||||||||
Description |
As editor of the New York Tribune, Greeley supported reform and stood against slavery. Greeley saw the potential for Helper's book, The Impending Crisis, as an abolitionist tool, and made copies available during the ""Speakership Fight"" of the 1859 Congress. Greeley was the new Liberal Republican Party's candidate in the 1872 U.S. presidential election. On November 29, 1872, after the popular vote but before the Electoral College cast its votes, Greeley died, the only time a Presidential candidate died during the electoral process. |
