Summary
[edit]DescriptionHoly Trinity church in Stow Bardolph - Hare Chapel interior - geograph.org.uk - 1737347.jpg |
English: Holy Trinity church in Stow Bardolph - Hare Chapel. Monument to Sir Thomas Hare (d.1693) with semi-recumbent marble effigy reclining upon an altar tomb. He is dressed in Roman armour and wears a wig. Sir Thomas died at the young age of 36 and his wife was buried beside him 56 years later. According to legend their daughter, Sarah Hare, who died in 1744 when approximately 50 years old, pricked her finger whilst sewing on a Sunday and died of blood poisoning shortly after. In her will she requested that an effigy of her face and hands be made and placed in a Mahogany case, close to where she was buried. The top door of the case, looking like a wardrobe and standing in the north-west corner of the chapel, can be opened to view the effigy. It was made from wax and is the only funerary effigy of its kind outside of Westminster Abbey.
