Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1080 Main Street, Buffalo, New York, April 2020. With a façade in an unusual white variety of Medina sandstone, Holy Trinity's main building owes its English Gothic design to the firm of Lansing & Beierl, while the striking modernist bell tower to its left left, unveiled in 1966, was the work of the firm of Shelgren, Patterson & Marzec. In conformity with the style, the Main Street façade is utterly dominated by the huge stained-glass window at its centre, which is decorated with lovely tracery and, like most of Holy Trinity's other stained glass, was made by the Calvert and Kimberly Company of New York. The window is flanked by a quartet of crenellated turrets and looms above the similarly crenellated main entrance, which consists of a wide compound Gothic arch enclosing three pairs of oak-panelled doors with more stained glass and tracery in the tympanum. Holy Trinity was founded in 1878 as the first Lutheran church in Buffalo to conduct services in the English language as opposed to German; before the present building's 1905 dedication, they spent their first years worshiping in the former Cottage Baptist Church at Washington and East Tupper Streets. Unlike most of Buffalo's Lutheran churches, Holy Trinity continued to survive and thrive through the 20th century and into the present day: it was expanded in 1959 with the construction of the Mansperger Chapel (at far left in this photo), was the recipient of a brand-new church organ in 1979, and was thoroughly renovated in 1996.
