Summary
[edit]DescriptionHoly Trinity Church, Cambridge - geograph.org.uk - 1262553.jpg |
English: Holy Trinity Church, Cambridge The first church recorded as Holy Trinity Cambridge was set beside the old roman road and was burnt to ground in 1174. In 1189 a new Holy Trinity began was built. A tower was also erected in which to house the bells (specifically the Sanctus Bell) which, for the next four hundred years were rung at mass. All that is left today is the stonework of the west wall under the present tower. In c1348 a steeple was added to the tower .Towards the end of 1400 two transepts which dominate the church today were built, with architectural emphasis in the Perpendicular period being laid more on the stone tracery, the windows were made tall, the roof heightened and the aisles made longer. Between the years of 1782-1836 Holy Trinity Church was to be the centre of revival of spiritual life in Cambridge with the ministry of Charles Simeon. (http://www.htcambridge.org.uk/) |
