Not far from here, in the Tyropcean, at the base ofan ancient wall, the western boundary of the Templearea, is the Wailing-Place of the Jews, where theycome every Friday afternoon, to lament over the ruinsof their Temple. It is an old custom, and a piteousspectacle, to see them with mournful prayers andsolemn wailings, pressing their foreheads and lips tothose venerable stones, that might once have been inthe foundation of their ancient Sanctuary. Theytake up the prayer of Isaiah, and in their Hebrewtongue pour it out in sad strains : Be not wrothvery sore, O Lord! neither remember iniquity for-ever ; behold, see, we beseech thee, we are all thypeople. Thy holy cities are a wilderness; Zion is awilderness ; Jerusalem is a desolation. A little south of this spot, and in a portion of thesame ancient wall, there is a remarkable ruin, discov-ered and described some years ago by Dr. Robinson.It is the spring of a great arch, composed of immensehewn stones, and supposed to be a portion of thegrand bridge over the Tyropoean, connecting MountZion with the Temple. May not this wonderful bridgehave been the ascent by which Solomon went up tothe house of the Lord, and which so excited theastonishment of the queen of Sheba ?
