| Description |
English: The Holmethorpe Nature Reserve was created, like most in Surrey and Middlesex, from abandoned sand and gravel pits which leave deep pools of water which get turned, either into yachting or water skiing facilities or into Nature Reserves. In this instance in order for the property developers to get planning permission for the new 'Watercolour' estate nearby they had to convert these pools into a reserve for wildlife, predominantly waterfowl.
This lake is the only local one with a number of posts sticking up out of the water for no particularly good reason other than to provide somewhere for cormorants to roost. As a consequence, this is the only lake in the area with cormorants on. The cormorant is used by conservationists as an indicator as to the health of the water as they are very sensitive to changes in pollution levels. If the water isn't good enough they disappear in a hurry. |
