| Description | The intersection of Pitt Alley and Ceylon Alley in the Hollister Triangle of Cincinnati’s CUF neighborhood is home to an overgrown and run-down former park. From what I understand after having a conversation with Christian Huelsman, this park was constructed alongside an adjacent senior housing complex during the late 1970s, the park was built with Federal Community Development Block Grant funding, with the stipulation that the space only be used for public purposes, not private ones. However, in 2011, under an emergency ordinance, the city council unlawfully sold it to a nearby property owner, whom intended to demolish the park’s walls and landscaping and turn the triangular green space into a parking lot. Still privately owned, the former park is now an eyesore and a public nuisance, with overgrown landscaping, fallen tree limbs, litter strewn about, and crumbling walls and stairs, which is a downgrade from how it was treated before being sold, as the city didn’t identify a department responsible for upkeep of the park. The public realm and local politics are very important, and Cincinnati’s neglect in general of both does not bode well for the city’s future, though individuals and small groups are trying their best to make a difference, to return this once-great city into a thriving, vibrant, livable place. |
