Description
Deutsch: Naturschutzgebiet "Steinberg-Dürrenfeld", 2km sw Hohenstein. Die weiträumige Landschaft der Mittleren Schwäbischen Alb um Hohenstein (früher Oberstetten mit eingemeindeten Dörfern Bernloch, Eglingen, Meidelstetten und Ödenwaldstetten ) ist durch einen vielgestaltigen Wechsel von Kuppen und flachen Trockentälern gekennzeichnet. Das Naturschutzgebiet stellt insofern einen repräsentativen Ausschnitt der Kulturlandschaft der Schwäbischen Alb dar. Die Häufung ähnlicher Naturschutzgebiete um Hohestein – drei weitere, kleinflächigere Naturschutzgebiete - unterstreichen dies.
Das Foto zeigt ein für die Mittlere Kuppenalb charakteristisches Biotopmosaik aus nicht mehr beweideten Wacholderheiden, die in früheren Zeiten ein großflächiges zusammenhängendes Weidegebiet darstellten. In mehreren aufeinander folgenden Sukzessionsphasen entwickelten sich aus den Magerweiden zunächst artenreiche Magerrasen. Diese wurden nach und nach von Wacholder und Nadelhölzern überwachsen, so dass heute der Eindruck von „ungepflegten" Nadelholzforsten entstand.

English: Naturschutzgebiet "Steinberg-Dürrenfeld", 2km south west of Hohenstein. The landscape on the northern part of the Schwäbische Alb), the Alb around Hohenstein,, is characterized by an accumulation of “Kuppen” (domes) and dry valleys. This Naturschutzgebiet and three others close by, represent the contemporary rural Alb very well.
The photo reflects the following characteristics: Extensive former grazing, the territory gradually turning into unused, but species-rich, calcareous grassland; in several steps of ecological succession juniper and pinales are taking over.
