Text Appearing Before Image:
by Commander Kiefer: Attention ! Wadhams Post, Number 49, Department ofConnecticut, Grand Army of the Republic ! In the name of the Grand Army of the Republic, I nowdedicate this monument. I dedicate it to the memory ofthose who in the navy guarded our inland seas and oceancoasts. I dedicate it to the memory of those who in thearmy fought for our hillsides, and valleys, and plains. Idedicate it to the memory of those who, on land and on sea, fought for the union, who fought for the authority of theconstitution, who fought for their country, and fell in de-fence of the flag, that government of the people, by thepeople, and for the people, should not perish from theearth. I dedicate it to the dead and to the living. Comrades, salute! Mr. Chairman, our service of dedication is ended. Inthe name of my comrades, I thank you and those you rep-resent for the courtesy extended to us at this time. After another musical selection by the band, theaddresses of presentation and reception followed.
Text Appearing After Image:
Adt & Brother, Photoghaphebs. Photo-Gravure Co. New York ON THE NORTH SIDE THE PRESENTATION TO THE TOWN. 81 The presentation of the monument to the town wasmade by Mr. F.J. King-sbury, in the following terms: MR. Kingsburys address. Mr. Chairman, Friends, and Fellow Citizens: Ahnosttwenty years after the firing of the last gun in the greatwar for the preservation of the Union, we are met hereto-day to celebrate the completion of a monument in honorof the men who went out from this town to fight our battlesfor us. But we are not sorry that we have waited — evenwaited long. For, while we have to regret that some whodesired to see this day have not seen it, so long as thiswork remained undone, yet still to be done, the hope of it,the reason of it, and the meaning of it have been ever pres-ent with us ; and so the thought of the past and the hopefor the future have been to us as truly monumental as thebronze and the granite in which they have finally resulted. As I stand here to-day,
