The figure on the north side represents a seatedveteran, resting beside a comrades grave. He isclad in the well-known overcoat and cape, and hisaccoutrements are cast off, as if fighting days wereover. His gun rests between his knees. His rightarm lies upon his knapsack, which stands on end,and his briar-wood pipe hangs loosely from his fingers.His face is full of experience and pensive thought.At his feet are the palm branch, the laurel wreath,and immortelles — emblems of victory, reconciliation,death, and fame. This may well be regarded as amemorial statue, reminding all who look upon themonument of the sacrifices which their countrymenmade in their behalf. While the returned veteran illustrates in one waythe fruits of the war, they are set forth in quiteanother way by the group on the south side of thepedestal.
