rROBASCO.PiEA SH/W HISTORY OF THE REFORMATION. 751 While England seemed binding herselfto the court of Rome, the general courseof the church and of the world gave strongerpresage every day of the approaching eman-cipation of Christendom. The respect whichfor so many centuries had hedged in theRoman pontiff was every where shaken ;the Reform, already firmly established inseveral states of Germany and Switzerland, was extending in France, the Low Coun-tries, >yand Hungary, and beginning in Swe-den, Denmark, arid Scotland. The Southof Europe appeared indeed submissive tothe Romish church ; but Spain, at heart, cared little for the pontifical infallibility ;and even Italy began to inquire whetherthe papal dominion Avas not an obstacle toher prosperity. England, notwithstandingappearances, was also going to throw offthe yoke of the bishops of the Tiber, andmany faithful voices might already beheard demanding that the word of Godshould be acknowledged the supreme autho-rity of the church.
