The annalsof the age swarm with scandals. In manyplaces the people were well pleased that thepriest should have a woman in keeping, thattheir wives might be safe from his seductions.What scenes of humiliation were witn-ssedin the house of the pastor! The wretchedman supported the mother and her children,with the tithe and the offering; his consciencewas troubled; he blushed in presence of hispeople, of his servants, aihd before God. Themother, fearing to come to want when thepriest should die, provided against it before-hand, and robbed the house. Her characterwas gone: her children were a living accusa-tion of her. Treated on all sides with con-tempt, thev plunged into brawls and debauch-eries. Such was the family of the priests.These horrid scenes were a kind of instructionthat the people were ready enough to follow.

HISTORY OF THE REFORMATION, 13 The mral districts were the scene of nu-merous excesses. The abodes of the clergywere frequently the resorts of the dissolute.Cornelius Adrian, at Bruges, the AbbotTrinkler, at Cappel, imitated the customs ofthe East, and had their harems. Priests, con-sorted with abandoned characters, frequentedthe taverns, played dice, and finished theirorgies by quarrels and blasphemy. Tne council of Schaffhausenpronibited theclergy from dancing in public except at wed-dings; from carrying two kinds of weapons;and decreed that a priest who should be foundin a house of ill-fame should be stripped ofhis ecclesiastical habit. In the archbishopricof Mentz they scaled the walls in the night,committed disturbances and disorders of allkinds in the inns and taverns, and broke opendoors and locks. In several places the priestpaid to the bishop a regular tax for the womanwith whom he lived, and for every child hehad by her. A German bishop, who was pre-sent at a grand entertain
