The great skating-rink which they selected astheir headquarters became the focus for all thethousands who needed hats, coats, shoes, flour,bacon, salt, sugar, coffee, or meat; and with thatvast army joined all the indigent population of theoutlying districts, who with lies on their lips, andhuge baskets on their arms, begged in piteous termsfor a morsel (?) of bread for their horridly burnedand starving (?) families. The methods and amount of work done appearby the following paragraph from a daily paper: — From seven oclock until eleven oclock the rinkwas thronged with applicants for food, armed withtickets from the committee or prominent citizens.A careful estimate of the family and single ticketsshows that from seventeen thousand to twenty thou-sand persons were supplied with substantial food.In addition to this, about three hundred were fed inthe rink, receiving three substantial meals. Each holder of a ticket for food is admittedthrough the main entrance, and is at once directed tothe circular counter in the middle of the rink. Oneof the clerks in waiting receives the ticket, and issuessupplies in proportion to the number of mouths to befed. The arrival of the Rev. C. G. Truesdale of Chicago,who was chairman of the Chicago Relief Committee,and who was sent out by that city to assist the peopleof Saint John and to advise the merchants of his owncity as to the kind of contributions most needed,changed the whole proceedings, and brought the workinto a still more systematic form. Under his superin-tendence, the Relief Association was re-organized,and the following committees appointed: — BOARD OF DIEECTOES. Mayor S. Z. Earle, president; W. H.
