e 19th ofNovember, 1787, twenty-six years thereafter.On that date the King signed a royal decreewherein he said that he had resolved that theextension of the conquest of Talamanca shouldbe proceeded with seriously, and that, for thatpurpose, such numbers of soldiers should berecruited at opportune times each year asmight be considered necessary as escorts forthe missionaries, who, he said, must enter theforests, gather together the Indians and estab-lish them in settlements appropriately located. While reports and papers came and went be-tween Madrid and Guatemala, the missionarieswere not idle. They diligently pursued theirtask of enticing the Indians from the mountainsof Talamanca; though it is undoubtedly true thatthe missions, left to their own resources, madesmall progress. However, the Padre Jáureguihad considerably augmented the population ofTérraba by the year 1774. The Indians beganalso to come in voluntarily, fleeing from theterrible persecutions of the ferocious Mosquitos

In 1780 fortyTalamancas presented themselves to the Com-mandant of the garrison at Matina, who for-warded them to Cartago, where they weregathered into the fold by the missionaries.During this same year a number of Viceitas alsowere brought in from the mountains. Duringthe year 1774, the missionaries labored withmuch success and were enabled with two hundredTalamanca Indians to found the village ofGuadalupe three leagues from San Francisco deTérraba towards the Chiriqui frontier. Yet, notwithstanding the favorable determina-tion of the King, nothing was carried into effectwith respect to Talamanca, and, even though themissionaries had to wait twenty-six years for theroyal decree of November 19, 1787, they arestill waiting for the escort granted them therein!In 1794 Don José Domas y Valle, President ofthe Audiencia of Guatemala, ordered the Gov-ernor of Costa Rica, Don José Vázquez y Téllez,to give them soldiers to enable
