At first sight these figures ap-pear to be too small when compared with thestories told by the conquistadores, who speak ofgreat numbers of Indians; but on this point ac-count must be taken of the tendency of theSpaniards to exaggerate in their reports of therichness and population of the conquered coun-tries in order to enhance the importance of theirpersonal achievements. In contrast with this,all the docmnents of the colonial period speakof the scarcity of the Indians, and these latterstatements are confirmed by the fact that thereare to-day in Costa Rica very few pure repre-sentatives of the aboriginal races, which is thereverse of the condition existing in other coun-tries of Central America that were conqueredand governed in the same manner.
