To the resistance of the Indians ofTalamanea the historian Vázquez alludes whenhe writes of the province of Costa Rica,where the Indians are so wild and warlike thatthey have defended themselves and repulsed theSpaniards and conquistadores with greater valorthan any other nation of the Indies. ^ The territory of Talamanea, like the rest ofCosta Rica, is mountainous in the extreme,covered with an exuberant tropical vegetation,and irrigated by an infinite number of rivers,though some of them are obstructed by verydifficult rapids. The Tar ire is navigable in itslower course, that is, in that part of the streamknown as the Sixaola. It is this river that is thesoul of the region; it is of the utmost importancebecause it constitutes the only natural highway Tray Francisco Vázquez—Crónica de Guatemala, Book II,Chapter XIII.

With the restof Costa Rica, Talamanca, as far as its geologi-cal formation, famia, flora and ethnology are con-cerned, is in perfect harmony. In Chapter 1of this history, data are given concerning its abo-rigines, of which there still exist two small tribes,miited under the nominal authority of a singlecacique, who bears the pompous title of King.^This title is the last thing remaining of that inde-pendence which, with such valor and tenacity,the Indians of Talamanca were able to defendagainst the Spaniards. The data we possess con-cerning their life and customs during ancienttimes have been handed down to us by the mis-sionaries of the 17th and 18th centuries. Amongthem were many who paid with their lives fortheir apostolic zeal.
